September 8-16, 2018
Led by Bridgette DeShields
Maximum #participants: 20
This tour will take you down the Oregon coast from Astoria to North Bend with the start and finish (and riding opportunities) in Albany, Oregon. The total mileage for the coastal portion of the tour is approximately 250 miles with 13,000 feet of climb over 5 full riding days; there is one optional riding day in albany at the end, and a non-riding (sightseeing day) at the beginning - see itinerary below.
The route includes some Category 3 climbs with an average of 50 miles and 2600 feet of climb a day. This tour is recommended for riders that can maintain an AB pace (12 mph average over the entire ride) or better and manage the mileage and climb each day – very limited SAG options.
The tour will be of the “Inn to Inn” style. Also known as a “credit card tour.” Participants will be responsible for getting themselves to Albany, Oregon (with carpooling opportunities) by the early evening of September 8th and home after the tour on September 15th or 16th (final day is optional). There will be two SAG vehicles with trailers/racks that will provide: support (including snacks and lunch); transportation (SAG vehicles plus rental vans) for taking bikes and participants to and from the main route start and finish locations in Astoria and North Bend; and transportation for luggage from hotel-to-hotel each day.
The transit days will be:
September 8: all participants arrive in Albany Oregon (~9-10 hr drive from Santa Rosa) – arrive by 6 pm please! Personal vehicles will be left in a long-term parking lot (free parking).
September 9: the support crew and vehicles will take all participants, their luggage, and bikes from Albany, Oregon to Astoria in the morning (arrival in Astoria by noon). No rides that day, but tour the cute town of Astoria and enjoy a group dinner where you can get to know fellow tour participants.
September 10-14: ride the coast.
September 14: after the ride that day the support crew and vehicles will take all participants, their luggage, and bikes from North Bend back to Albany, Oregon where we will stay that night.
September 15/16: you can depart the next morning (Saturday, September 15) or stay one more night and enjoy riding and/or sightseeing options in Albany, Oregon (rivers, covered bridges, and more) and depart instead on Sunday, September 16. Please indicate your preference when you register.
